This place really
is secluded.
From the deck,
enjoy the spectacular views of Laurel Fork canyon to the north. Listen to the songbirds. Walk down the deck stairs
to explore our lot. Notice the “U.S. Boundary” sign on the pine at
the edge of the bluff due north. Listen for the little waterfall at the base of the
rock wall beneath you. Find the deer trail just to the left of where you parked. It takes you
to the left of the bluff, down a slope, to a lush swath of ferns alongside a little brook thick with rhododendrons. Wander back up the lot toward Retreat Road. Look for turkey scratches (where flocks of the birds have looked for food),
signs of deer and fox, wildflowers, mushrooms, ginseng, ferns and mountain laurel.
Venture down to the hiking
and horse trail at the end of Retreat Road and explore the Big South Fork forest. Stroll back up Retreat Road
and visit the horses and cows in a truly bucolic setting.
